The Concert Jazz Band issued three albums on vinyl. Unfortunately, I wore through all three. Fortunately, I made a tape of each before playing and was able to buy replacements for a while. While Gerry Mulligan has received honors/awards/recognition commensurate with his genius, other members of the CJB have not received the same. Conte Candoli (brother of Henry Mancini's band, Pete Candoli) is a terrific trumpeter and leads a strong section. Bob Brookmeyer, playing a valve trombone instead of the typical slide version, anchors a versatile trombone section. Zoot Sims would be competitive with any saxaphonist of his era. Oddly for a large band, there is no piano but it isn't missed. From "Sweet and Slow" that starts the album to the upbeat "Broadway" and the classic "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" both the solo work and the ensemble playing are exceptional. (Full disclosure: My band tried replicating "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" and finally gave up.)The CD being reviewed is not the same as the real first album simply titled "The Concert Jazz Band." Instead, it has about seven additional tracks including a few live performances. It would be great if someone would package the complete output of The Concert Jazz Band in a boxed set but until that's available, this CD is definitely worth the price.
