Jan Talich Sr and Jr (viola and violin respectively)constitute half of the great Talich Quartet who recordedfirst rate performances of the Beethoven and Mozart quartets and the Mozart quintets et al. They plays energetically and with distinctive interpretive depth. In the k364, this is especially true of the Andantino iin which emotion is intensified via the sharing of voices. Along with the second movement (in C Minor) of the Piano Concerto #9, k271 and the first two movements of the piano sonata in A Minor, k 310, the Andantino is one of Mozart's greatest darker movements until then. The outer movements are equally good, but here the orchestra sounds a bit scrawny c.f the Cleveland for Szell the LSO for Colin Davis/Grumiaux and the Saar CO for Ristenpart in K364. Thus the dropped star. However the Duos are peerless, even c.f the team of Grumiuax/Pellicia/Philips. I have always consideredk424 greater than k423. Here the latter sounds better than ever, but so does k424, as it does also for Grumiaux/Pellicia. I still fail to understand how Mozart could produce quartet or at least trio textures froma Duo, but these works, especially underrated- all 38:37 here. PS-this cd is also available currently on MP3more inexpensively.Peers: Duos:Grumiaux/Pellicia/ Philips; Perlman/Zukerman/RCA" Sinfonia Concertante k364: Szell/Sony; Grumiaux/Pellicia/Davis; Buechner/Schmid/Ristenpart; Bohm/BPO/DG
