Vinyl Review: Speakers Corner 2022 reissueCover: Thin card stock, disappointing, not as good as a Blue Note Classic Series. The artwork, images and typography are crisp and sharp. Has insert booklet of other Speakers Corner reissuesLiner: Poly lined paper replaced with archival sleeve post record cleanVinyl: flat totally quiet, no surface noise or visible defects, a good clean pressingSadly lacks punch and power as if the detail has been lost. Some tracks are much better than others . Good but not great, jacket could be much better, Somewhat underwhemling.I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile. • Clarity – good but lacks crispness and sharpness like the edges have been knocked off, worn • Channel separation – very good not hard left/right good overall placement • Channel balance – good, instruments are well spaced and have “air” around them • Sound Stage – reasonably wide detailed and transparent but the lack of crispness limits the sound stage • Distortion – non audible • Compression – just fails to soar, seems constrained and limited • Atmosphere – warm sultry, muddy, intimate • Bass – low frequencies – limited, booms but lacks definition • Treble – high frequencies – cymbals sound restrained and limited, horns lack “Ooomph” mid range sounds “fuzzy” • Vocals – hoots, hollers and shouting, band are clearly audibleAs a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame.
