I had a pair of old EPI speaker in the basement. I was trying to clean the basement and found it laying there for years. Connected the speaker to a receiver and the sound was terrible and made a lot of noises. Opened up the mesh cover and found the foam ring on both woofers were broken into pieces. Touch them and they fell off. I was thinking that nobody use the big speakers nowadays and I was planning to throw them away.Somehow I saw there are a few online videos on YouTube showing how to restore the old vintage speakers, which piqued my curiosity. I thought, hey, let's give a try. There are a few supplies sell for foam ring replacement kit (some of them using rubber rings). I did more research and decided to stay with the foam ring (the rubber rings may last longer but may give different sounds compared to the original specs). I called the technical service of Simply Speakers and the agents there were very helpful. I called twice to confirm I should order this kit (instead FSK-12F). This weekend I took my time to replace the foam ring - OMG! what a difference this has made!!! The sound was rich and clean, and it sounds like a million bucks! For $25 bucks cost? Can't believe it. I would give it a 6-star if I could! Two suggestions: (1) take your time to clean the old ring, don't rush. Proper seal is very important! (2) this one may be more important: I read a few online suggestions from folks talking about using shims to ensure the centering the cone when refoaming (this one "[...]" helped me a lot). One guy on internet told his story that after refoaming the cone was not properly centered so he has to redo it again. Therefore I cut open the dust cap and used a few thin strips of vanilla folder (4 pieces of 1-inch wide each) which has the right thickness to make sure it is properly centered. After gluing, the cone does not rub the wire coil at all. Yeah, I then glued the old dust cap back. It may not be pretty but does the trick (who would like the dust cap other than me :-p). I am very happy with the final results!Good luck to your project, and it is very much worth the efforts!
